Viral Attack

Viral Attack is a Shoot ’em up game made for the online game jam Minijam 167 on Itchi.io. The theme was “Cyber”.

Made in 48 hours with a team of 6 people, this was the first game jam project I ever participated in. Through the rush of time, I was also new to the workflow, since I was trying to use FMOD as a middleware for this project.

using our established theme and the moodboard we had created as a team, I started creating sound effects and musics on Ableton Live 11.

Our game’s system is a boss battle system in 5 phases, where the 5th is a “corruption” phase, altering the boss’ appearance, his strength, and with them the entire ambiance.

This was expressed through changes in the ambiance and music

Ambiance event:

Music event:

The rest of the events were planned surrounding all the actions and reactions from both our player’s character and the boss itself.

The playable character has 1 basic and 3 special available actions:

  • A basic shooter (nicknamed Vanilla here)
  • A cumulative laser (the more you hold it down, the more damage it does)
  • A tracker missile
  • A healing salve

As for the boss, his sole attack is a powerful laser with a long charging phase.

Other events are focused on feedbacks and ambiant sound effects, like damage hits, wing sounds or game win/game over cues.

In the end, very little audio was integrated to the game, since the intergration of FMOD onto Unity was unclear and unsolvable to us in the little time we had.

Nonetheless, the amount of experience I was able to cumulate through those 48 hours of work were very precious, and learning FMOD as a tool for this project was extremely interesting.
